Back when I was posting artwork on DeviantArt, I was planning to do a really ambitious piece, called House of Blues. It was going to depict a huge dance party of famous blue fictional characters. Here’s a rough sketch of the piece that gives an idea of what it would look like:
You’ve got Sonic the Hedgehog breaking (as you do), while Mordecai from Regular Show toasts with Gumball’s Mom. We have Gumball himself looking confused at Bloo, who is wearing a sombrero (inside joke). There’s the Water Pokémon Froakie, Papa Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Smurfette, and the Disco-dancing Mung Daal (from Chowder). There’s also Cookie Monster, who would’ve been at the snack table eating–what else?–cookies.
The idea seemed so good at the time that I wanted to go even further! I drew some more characters on a couple of post-it notes that I wanted to add to the piece. Megamind would have been scheming with the Blue Meanie, Mega Man would be awkwardly drinking an Energy Can, and even Huckleberry Hound would be strumming along to the music (probably).
Unfortunately, this idea never came to pass for one reason or another. At first, I didn’t have the tablet to do a project like this at the time. Then as time went on, I decided completing this project wasn’t worth the effort. I figured at the very least I could share the concept with people.
2013 was probably the last time I drew characters from cartoons on television–on a regular basis, anyway. Now I mostly draw my own characters, which I don’t show on this blog for reasons involving copyright (or lack thereof).
I tend to cringe at my older works, assumingly like many other artists, but in this post I’m going to show you a few of them (because I’m masochistic).
I drew these characters in crayon because I didn’t own a proper tablet at the time.
Dexter (Dexter’s Laboratory), and Ed, Edd, ‘n’ Eddy
Mac and Bloo (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends)
Anais Watterson (The Amazing World of Gumball)
Unfinished artwork of Palutena (Kid Icarus), 2014
The brazen, brutish King of the Koopas is ready to pound on some plumbers! The lines here are a little rough, I know–I really just wanted to test my shading and fire-painting skills.
By the way, if you own a Wii U and don’t have Super Mario Maker, you’re missing out on a whole lot of fun and frustration.
It’s been a while since I’ve actually drawn something new! In the middle is Isabelle from Animal Crossing New Leaf, in between the Squid Sisters Callie and Marie from Splatoon. Both games are made by the same team!
Here are a couple of Nintendo characters I drew in the last couple of years using Sketchbook Pro on the Wacom Cintiq tablet.
Yoshi, December 2013
Wario, February 2014. (He’s got some tiny arms.)
Donkey Kong, April 2014
Inklings, July 2014 (Before I found out that they had those weird fangs.)
